How's your taste?
Unlocking Success in Independent Film Production: Insights from Hal Prince
In one of my earliest production roles, I had the privilege of attending a Q&A session with legendary Broadway producer Hal Prince. This experience was a masterclass in understanding the art of creating successful productions.
Prince, known for his numerous hit shows, shared many captivating stories about his illustrious career and collaborations. But one comment resonated with me the most: When asked how he consistently identified potential hits, his response was refreshingly simple:
"I was blessed with average taste. I never liked the avant-garde. I picked things I liked, and it turned out other people liked it too."
This insight speaks volumes, especially for those of us in the independent media and entertainment industry. While not everyone may be "blessed with average taste," many of us are drawn to the esoteric, the offbeat, and the unconventional.
So, how do we channel our unique tastes into a media landscape driven by the quest for the next big hit?
Here are some strategies and ideas to navigate this challenge.
