Sometimes projects enter, exit, and re-enter your life over a period of time.
A few months ago, Mav Block's startling, gorgeous, and truly unique debut feature "Difference & Repetition, 2020" did just that.
It was a project I'd been creatively involved with very early on, but which left me during physical production, until we were reunited in post and beyond. Today, I'm thrilled to share -- as a co-producer and fan of the artists who made it -- that it will premiere at Brooklyn Film Festival on June 8th as the penultimate film of this year's fest.
When I first started working on D&D, 2020, with Mav, it was called "SILVIA" and was a short film primarily comprised of text from Hannah Arendt (and other political philosopher's) writing. In short, it was weird and strange and complicated and all ART that frankly I felt had little concern for who would ultimately want to watch it. But as Mav continued to develop and refine the story, it blossomed into a gorgeously shot, beautifully realized, meta-romance about a marriage and the fragmented memories that comprise a life together. In both English and Spanish, and made as an American, Peruvian and Argentinian co-production, it is still absolutely a piece of art, but so clearly meant for an audience now.
Producers Daniel Rehder, María Arrastoa and Lu Celestino deserve all the credit (alongside Mav's mad genius) for actually bringing this film to life, and I'm honored to be counted amongst them. Thanks for ensuring there was an IRL project to re-unite with.
I don't know where exactly this film will find its home -- in many ways it's still a challenging movie without an easy-to-sell marketing hook, and I know there are filmmakers and producers and financiers who would look at this and be like "you crazy." And maybe so... but sometimes I have the luxury of choosing to be part of something because I believe in some intangible quality that needs to be nurtured, challenged, supported and celebrated... and I believe I can help do that.
If you're going to be in NYC on June 8th, please come by and see this beautiful film in a dark room with an audience!
